Study finds depressed women have more sex

Article from: AAP
DEPRESSED women have more sex than those who are happier, regardless of whether they are in a relationship or not, a study of Australians has found.

A survey of Melbourne women presented at an international mental health conference has concluded that females who suffer from mild to moderate depression have a third more sexual activity than those who are not.

They also had more sexually liberated attitudes, a bigger variety of sexual experiences and, if single, were more likely to partake in casual sex, Sabura Allen, a clinical psychologist at Monash University, said.

\”It was more sex and more of everything from kissing to petting, foreplay and intercourse,\” said Dr Allen, who studied the recent sexual experiences of 107 depressed and non-depressed women who were in relationships.

\”We knew this anecdotally from clinical samples but this is the first time it\’s been shown in research.\”

She said depressed women were likely seeking out sexual intimacy more often to help feel more secure.

\”When people are depressed they feel more insecure about their relationships and concerned that their partner may not care about them or find them valuable,\” Dr Allen said.

\”Having sex helps them feel that closeness and security.\”

Asked whether intercourse could be an effective balm for depression, the psychologist said \”we really don\’t know but we presume it helps as it gives these women opportunities to be close to their partner and loved.\”

The team also is investigating depressed single women and has found a trend towards more casual sex than happier singles.

Dr Allen said Australian couples tend have sex between once and three times a week, with \”very much the majority in the once a week group\”. Single women have it \”significantly less\”, but the same is not necessarily true of single men.

The study, soon to be published in a British medical journal, was presented today at the International Congress on Women\’s Mental Health in Melbourne where the latest research in mental illness and hormone-related conditions is being showcased.

New studies have shown high rates of severe PMS and post-natal depression among Australian women, a dramatic drop in the abortion rate, and a promising new treatment for Alzheimer\’s disease.

Look, I don\’t know about you but when I was depressed the last thing I wanted to do was get naked in front of someone that I don\’t particularly know well.

On the other hand when I feel attractive and good about myself, well, its a totally different matter.

I agree that sex does things to your brain and makes you feel good, but if I am depressed I just want to hide in my house and not even go out, so having lots of sex kind of gets well, impossible.

Hmmmm not really convinced. Maybe I should stop taking those happy pills.

I feel I should take most of the credit for this, as having sex with me leaves most women feeling depressed and unsatisfied, hence driving them out to seek solace elsewhere.

I am expecting a knighthood, at the very least, for my services to world population growth.

Looks at above comment and *rolls eyes*..but seriously, I think the researchers are definitely on the right track. Sex is well known to reduce levels of stress and anxiety when partaken of with a loving partner.

Hello from England. I personally would like to know the reason for the depression, when i split from my long term husband (22 yrs) i had a splurge of brief relationships, but then i had been a one man woman for a long time and didn’t realise you don’t always think of your shopping list whilst having sex. Personally i am with you fluffybutt, i like plenty of sex when i am happy, and been a bbw there is no way i am getting down and dirty when feeling depressed.

I guess it depends on how ya view sex? I see sex as a gender determination … male/female. Intercourse … then ofcourse it shines a new light on things ;). Banging with a different head. Nail that one to the statistics!!! there is a promising treatment for lots of dis-eases … it’s called perception! … love and hugs

Well I think i can see what all this is in the study….I tend to agree, because just from knowing people and all I see how a depressed person not feeling good about themselves could maybe “go a bit further” indeed at sex just to sort of try and fulfill a security need of still feeling somewhat desirable pretty in a world of gray and ugly. I do think it may be good for them mentally for a while but in the long run they could get allsorts disease plus pregnant too and also become suicidal from the frivolous behavior. Having said that I want to say also that maybe if a person is depressed and bored and with someone there may not be anything else to do. Having said that I want to say I am depressed but not that depressed and besides anyway wasn’t this study exclusively about women, the female sex gender? Having said all that I may have to get counseling myself if I don’t have some kind of intimacy soon. Not sex mind you but a real and caring someone that would be kind and gentle soul. sick of all the games and meanies…Take care you and thanks for posting such a wonderful fascinating study…catch you later , and having said that bye bye for now girl!:)

PS having said that, I think they should have covered masterbation also in this study don’t you? Because if they didn’t up frequency of that they that means yes they did have some form of “co-dependent” need, that means it was a “patch” to make them feel better and not necessarily for any real “release”, don’t you agree then?
sorry so long, will write tomorrow

Funny…a study done here in Canada found that married couples with a vigorous sex life were less likely to deal with depression. Whether they were happily married or not! (Go figure) Another study found that 90% of the population was more likely to believe a quote if it was anonymous. The source of this quote was, of course, anonymous. Another is how 50% of the population disagrees with the other half. (go figure ๐Ÿ™‚

Well it, in this case is a form of escape.. and it releases endorphins that render temporary relief. You could get the same kick out of eating an entire bar of 100% cocoa. Personally I have never gotten naked with anyone that I did not know very well.. allot of people do though.. I have to agree here. I’ve dealt with bed ridden bad depression…over two years ago I became 100% disabled.. I slept most of 2007 and half of 2008.. and the LAST thing I wanted to deal with was another nekked idiot!..lol

I read a study a while back. They did a study of college aged kids. The study was sexual in nature. They found that those who used condoms suffered nigher rates of depression… makes you think doesn’t it?….Women who did not use condoms had little to no depression.. Talk about chemistry!..and… it leave me little doubt as to how homosexuals came to be called GAY..lol…look up that word… the definitions related to same sex has been added but that isn’t what the word means.
